The Emerson Circle of All Souls

Emerson’s Heresy with Paul Grimstad

Thursday, May 28, 2009, 6:30 p.m. at the All Souls Church, 80th and Lexington, (www.allsoulsnyc.org) The Ware Room, 6:30 p.m. Reception (light refreshments), 7:00 p.m. Presentation.

“But the word Miracle, as pronounced by Christian churches, gives a false impression; it is Monster. It is not one with the blowing clover and the falling rain.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson, Divinity School Address (1838)

Paul Grimstad will revisit for us Emerson's famous "Divinity School" address and considers specifically the way Emerson’s treatment of miracles led to a bitter controversy within the Unitarian community in 1838. Professor Grimstad will be broadly concerned with tensions within Unitarian liberalism around orthodoxy and tolerance. In addition to Emerson, the presentation will pay specific attention to Andrews Norton, who wrote a series of pamphlets denouncing Emerson as a "heretic" in the months following his controversial address.  Paul Grimstad, PhD, is an assistant professor of English at Yale University. He is working on his first book, Experience and Experimental Writing from Emerson to the Jameses. His essays and reviews have appeared or are forthcoming in Bookforum, the Yale Review, Poetics Today, Raritan, the Henry James Review, and The Brooklyn Rail.

ONGOING INVITATION by The Emerson Circle to its twice monthly gatherings, held in the Ware Room at All Souls Church. The group meets the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of most every month to read aloud and discuss the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson and other like-minded Transcendentalist authors. Readings will be provided.
