RWE Random Quotes

Guard well your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds. Discard them and their value will never be known. Improve them and they will become the brightest gems in a useful life. The days come and go like muffled and veiled figures sent from a distant friendly party, but they say nothing, and if we do not use the gifts they bring, they carry them as silently away.

A chief event of life is the day in which we have encountered a mind that startled us.
from Essays: First Series,  Self Reliance

The Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson Web Site is a celebration of one of America's finest philosophers.  The Site is designed for easy reading, printing on paper and/or downloading into a handheld computer like the PalmPilot.

We are, as we are forever, a work in progress.  The site has grown and will grow, but it's still what it is and will be, a growth pot filled with RWE soil.

Be sure to visit the Guest Book and instantly help the site expand, put your own quotes there (remember, RWE was not fond of people quoting him, so make them your quotes).

Scan the Essays and Books or relax with the Uncollected Prose.  Emerson would suggest that wherever you look, you've looked in the right place; take your time, read what is at hand and don't concern yourself with the whole piece.  Read what you need, it's right in front of you.

We are aiming toward RWE's complete works online.  This is a difficult task in terms of collecting text that's available in digital format.  If you have any "Emerson specific" resources that are not presented here, please forward them to jim@rwe.org.

Thank you for your visit

Is the acorn better than the oak which is its fullness and completion? Is the parent better than the child into whom he has cast his ripened being?
from Essays: First Series,  Self Reliance

Please Note:     RWE.org is the result of remarkable influence and inspiration from The School of Practical Philosophy's Emerson teacher, Mrs. Barbara Solowey.  She has a 'startling mind.' (see quote at top of page)
